Guinea Pig races-an introduction to beginners in 13 varieties

Guinea Pigs are among the most common pets in the world. Their miniature size, fur and quiet nature makes them irresistible to thousands of pet owners. Those who have owned one often mention that they are a fantastic alternative to rabbits and hamsters.

Also called the cavy, Guinea Pigs are rodents belonging to the family Caviidae. Contrary to popular opinion, they are in any way associated with the family of pork, although their common name clearly says so. There are a variety of different races with different temperaments and physical characteristics. Here's a brief look at some of them.

The American

More popularly known as the English Cavy, the American has short fur that lies flat on his body. Are the most common in families.

Abyssinian

Abyssinian sport a coat that looks like a swirly fur coat that gives them their distinct look scruffy. Their coats are a deep shine to them.

Peruvian

Peruvians feature straight and smooth coats that can grow several inches. Unlike other varieties, the Peruvian requires a lot of grooming and lots of cutting hair to make them look presentable.

Silkie

The Silkie is characterized by its long silky coat that grows from his head and back on the floor. Silkies appear as designer of rags and is appreciated by their long hair that resembles satin coats.

The tuft

The Crested is characterized by CURL on his forehead and his hair short. There are two types of crested cavies: the American crested and the English crested.

Teddy

The bear looks very similar to what its name suggests: a teddy bear. Has the distinct coat is short, thick and Kinky. The fur stands up on end giving Teddy looks very cutesy and fuzzy.

Texel

The Texel is a rare cavy thats characterized by its long hair that seems to be permed. The Texel requires a lot of maintenance.

Crown

The Crown has a single Rosette at the center of his forehead. They have long hair appearance that requires a lot of grooming.

English Merino

English Merino sports curly hair that is long on the sides with a single rosette on the head. English Merino are another rare varieties, which makes them very expensive.

Ridgeback

The Guinea pig Ridgeback wears a ridge of hair running from their head and shoulders. Ridgebacks, just like English Merino, are extremely rare.

Alpaca

Alpaca is long hair that forms in tiny ringlets. A variety of sources say that the Alpaca is a cross between Rex and the Peruvian English.

Rex

The Rex breed is characterized by their large heads, small faces and eyes that are shaped petals. Have hair that are available in various colours.

Hairless

Out of all types of Guinea pigs, the hairless is more unique. The hairless Guinea pig, also called the skinny pig, is characterized by their skin leathery and hairless. Some pet owners find them frightening features, while others enjoy their unique look.
