Many of us have soft spots in our hearts for the animals. If you could change the world so that even a cat or dog would be abandoned, abused or homeless, we would like.
We are willing to help, but what is the best option? That we should support? National rights organizations, large animal? National Pet wellness? Our local shelters?
Of course there may be many right answers and certainly all the aid we give to animals is good, but if you allow me, I would try to scrutinize your heart ... I can find is a lot like mine, and the two of us can do very well together.
When I do to help animals, I want to have a big impact. I want to change the world. I want to make the world a much better place for a real dog or cat. No wait, I want to make the world a better place for many dogs and cats.
Local ANIMAL SHELTERS are where you can do the most good.
If you want to make a real difference in a life of dog or cat, try your local animal shelter, where you can do the most good for a real dog or cat on the street.
Why local?
Your local shelter is probably much more financially needy of national organisations which have budgets in multi millions of dollars. Local shelters are often run on tight budgets by volunteers who are, bless their hearts, often sold out and deserve our support.
Your local shelter needs volunteers.
Shelters need volunteers to walk the dogs. You can look in Brown eyes of a dog shelter and bring you joy and happiness of taking him for a walk in the Sun? Shelters need people walking the dogs.
You can share your love for animals by helping shelters in other ways? Humane society shelters and have many needs for volunteers and every job is important! Some volunteers are practices or send thank-you notes. Some volunteers help clean up. Some volunteers feed the animals. Some volunteers do practical work around the shelter. Some volunteers may help keep the landscape. Some volunteers may help to answer phones. As sure as I'm writing these words, which local shelters probably can really use your help as a volunteer.
Support shelter volunteers and staff
Working in an animal shelter is hard work and can be daunting. Can bring snacks to support the staff of human society? Perhaps buy them gift cards for a fun night out or a special treatment? Hire a masseur to massage away a day? The encouragement that you bring to the shelter staff will translate directly into morale of shelter and the quality of life for its four-legged benefactors.
Your local shelter grant three wishes
Most shelters have a wish list of items that they really need, such as towels, paper towels, bleach, food and other supplies. Bringing items that need more locally, fully organic, lets you do more good that you can do ... and you don't have to stop at three wishes. You can deliver the items on the wish list every Monday. (And why not throw in a few bars of candy for the staff of the humane society?)
You ... the foster parent of a four-legged person?
Some humane society needs to encourage parents to care for puppies and kittens that need more care than can give shelter. There are also specific breed rescues who often need to encourage parents to take a dog or a cat, until you can find a home. Sometimes this is a great option for people with a special place in their hearts for specific breeds or puppies and kittens. The adoptive parents are special people. Can be one?
Helping your special skills
There are many things that make you special. You might be surprised to discover that some of the things that you learned in your life ... some of the things that make you special, can be a desperate need for your local animal shelter! You are good at planning events? Are you a good graphic designer? Web designer? Are you good at fundraising? Gardening? Writing? Administrative skills? Many of these skills are necessary evil from shelters to update web pages, reach the public, raise funds, send newsletters, are special events that raise funds.
Artists and entrepreneurs
Human society have fundraising events such as auctions to raise funds. You can contribute a piece of art or other goods from your business? Can help employees to volunteer at an event?
The most significant aid is aid that takes valuable time and psychologists tell us that gain the most benefit from volunteering when we look in the eye of someone who we helped. Really consider getting involved.
It is important to support large organizations, too, but money can end up a drop in the ocean and can go towards the Government lobbying or some other such activities that may impact a large number of animals, but indirectly. Some animal welfare organisations also work not a shelter.
Your heart's in the right place. Now do the step necessary to contact your local shelter and see what you have that you can share to make a big difference, not only in the lives of real cats and dogs, but also on their own.
