We are having a heat wave in most of North America this year. Humans and animals are doing their best to survive high temperatures. Animals in their natural habitat will take care of themselves. Those animals that are our pets are dependent on us for ways to stay cool and keep cool extra comfort during these hot summer days.
Dogs and cats share almost the same symptoms as we do when we get overheated. We see them as our friends and neglect their size and needs.
If the pet needs cooling and there is no shade or air conditioning available:
Run cold water from the garden hose over his head orPlace cold packs or wet wipes between the hind legs, armpits or on the stomach. Here's a checklist of 7 ways to stay cool and keep pets cool this summer.
1. do not leave pets in vehicles
On the news we hear about dogs and cats die in closed vehicles. The car may have been left open for ventilation, however, is not enough. Here in Florida car park closed will have a thermometer reads 115 degrees or more.
2. provide shade for your dog
Our outdoor dogs need shade. Some breeds do well under a tree the other will dig holes in the ground to get to Earth. If available, bring your dog into the air conditioning for relief.
3. keep water available
Check their supply of water as the heat heats the water and noticed that most dogs will not drink. Don't provide iced water or ice cubes for your pet. There is a mixed opinion about whether ice cubes are good or bad.
4. Easy on exercise
Take your walks in the morning or during the coldest part of the evening. He lives in a climate with high humidity it puts a heavy sweat alarm or sweating as a warning that the human body is overheating. Your dog panting heavily is a warning to slow down or stop. Dogs pant to cool or will sit or lie down in a cool place and stop moving.
5. Stay out of the hot pavement.
I know sneakers or sandals protect our feet. The seemingly thick padding on the bottom of the legs of our pet cannot take the hot asphalt or concrete. Could manage to walk barefoot on hot surfaces? Ouch!
6. Observe your dog occasionally for any signs of heat stroke
During the initial stages of heat stroke your dog will quickly pant. As the symptoms become worse there will be thick saliva and gums turn bright red. Body temperature will range from 104 to 106 degrees, causing your dog go into shock with quenching body organs.
After that you will notice the gums pale. Your dog will appear weak and dizzy. Vomiting and diarrhea, make their presence and your dog falls into a coma or seizure that require emergency attention from a veterinarian.
